capturing LPT port to JetDirect printer

Is it possible to capture a printer port and
define it as LPT1: when the HP LaserJet
is a JetDirect printer accessible on the
network via TCP/IP? I have legacy MS-DOS
programs on an NT that can only print via LPT
mappings.

I hope the answer isn't that I need to hook
the printer up to a physically-connected
computer in a Windows 98 print server
configuration. I realize that capturing
LPT in the traditional manner would be
possible that way but I'm trying to
avoid the hassle. Surely there is a
slick way to accomplish this. (?)

Setup the type of printer you have on LPT1 of your server,then create an HP port with JetAdmin to associate with that printer. If you do not use JetAdmin, then create a TCP/IP port and do the same.

Not knowing what your server environment is makes my response a guess. If you are in a Windows server environment you can write a capture statement in the users logon script.

depends on your OS. In NT (2000 also?) you use net use. In Win 9x, the jetdirect software won't let you use LPT1, but you can use LPT2 or 3 or 4. If you can mange the HP web site, get to the support section and search for "jetdirect DOS printing" or something similar. It should/might find some technical docs for you.
