Capturing Data+Log File Readers+Javascript Tags

If you guys wanted to build you very on log file reader or capture user data (browser, referrer, cliks through the site, etc etc)with javascript tagging. Where would you start?

Basically we are interested in building our own analytics tool at work so we can customize a solution that fits all of our needs. Ad serving, analytics, mass email distribution, etc etc. We are going to build one tool that does it all.

So with that said I need to know where to start to build a tool like Urchin or Web Trends, Omniture ,etc etc.

What methods are they using to collect all of the data.

Big tasks I realize, just not sure where to start on the analytics side.

Looking to gather info like:

agent, referrer, request, date, remotehost, etc.

Trying to understand how referrer collection can tell what keyword they used in Google for example to get to the website.
