Capture print file to disk DNWs under Win XP 1

Greetings.

I have a cust running Win XP Pro and Novell client 4.83 sp2 to attach to a fully patched Novell 3.12 server.

Everything works normally, except the cust cannot capture print files to disk. For example, entering the command:

capture /l=1 /cr=F:jock.txt

where F: is mapped to the novell server results in the error message:

unable to create capture file in the specified directory.

The same command with the same user logon and the same directories on the server works fine under Win 95, Win 98 and, of course, DOS 6.22 (yes, it lives).

I have installed a workaround by setting up a dummy generic text only printer and sharing it so the user can net use lpt1 \\wsname\textprinter, which works fine. However I was wondering if anyone knows how to get the capture to work, because it means I have to set up/maintain special batch files for the XP machine and it also means I have to rely on the user to correctly enter the name of the disk file to create so downstream apps can access it.

Thanks in advance
Jock

Hi, folks.

Well, I chased down the problem, not very satisfactorily, but so it goes. I tried using capture.exe from Novell 4.11 which produced the same error, but this time with an error code (453). That pointed me to:

10021102 10021102 10021102 fact

Novell Client 4.6 SP2 for Windows NT

formerly TID 2924351

symptom

Issuing the command "CAPTURE LPT1 /CR=[mapped drive]:\<filename.txt>" generates Error.

Error: CAPTURE-4.15-453 error with NT Client

cause

This functionality is not available within Windows NT because of a Microsoft Windows NT design issue.

fix

Currently, this functionality is not supported.

Unquote.

So, it's all M$'s fault. Sigh.

At least I found the text printer workaround.
