Are you using a font which contains lowercase charactors.
It may seem like a funny question but some fonts are only uppercase like Trajan

If you look in the Character palette and expand the options (the arrow pointing right - top), is 'All Caps' checked.
If not I would guess MarcusStringer has got it, when he says that the font may not contain lowercase characters.
