canvas size haywire

On some photos when I add canvas size and check relative to make a photo border, it works fine. On other photos, the canvas is lopsided. It adds white space to only the top or side and works randomly.

How to I make a border with canvas size so that it always adds an equal amount to the height and width?

...just verify you have the anchor set to the middle square, there is a a diagram below the input fields that is clickable in any of the squares.

To have even borders using canvas size you will need the centre square selected (anchoring from the centre point of the image. This will then show arrows all around the outside with the centre square being darkened out in appearance...
