I've got a .ai file open in Illustrator and need to change some elements, but can't view the image on the canvas. I can see the layers/paths (i'm used to photoshop, so this looks familiar) but how do I view them on the canvas and how do i select them to edit them?

If you go to View>Outlines or command+y, tell us what you see?
is the anything there? Is it just a box? If it's just a box then it could be linked image.
