Can't view desktop remotesly

I have a new server running Redhat 8 and everything works fine at the server/monitor as far as Xwindows is concerned.

When I try to view the server's desktop from my PC using startx logged in as root from a telnet session I get this message along with a bunch more saying it can't find this and that. I have exported the display using export DISPLAY=PC98:0.0 and changed the resolution down to 640x480

I'm using MicroImags X Server at the PC

Unable to open desktop file applications:///Office/redhat-word-processor.desktop for panel launcher: Error reading file 'applications:///Office/redhat-word-processor.desktop': File not found


Any Ideas?

You don't use startx for your local pc display.

start with xterm, and make sure that works.
Then you can try either gnome-session or whatever other
X11 desktop you wish.

/usr/X11R6/bin/xterm -fn 6x13 -sb -ls -display $(LOCALIP):0

Quick way to test.

start an xterm session on you PC.
At the RH8 prompt type gnome-session

you should get a desktop display.
I tried this an it worked.

If you already have X running on your PC you can use 'Xnest -query <server-ip>' to get the complete server desktop.

If you aren't running X on the PC 'X -query <server-ip>' will give you a login on the server and 'X -indirect <server-ip>' will give you a list of computers depending on how your PC has been configured.
