i'm using a sony CRX140E (yeah, old school). i was able to write and rewrite with no problems before, but now i cant erase..i can't even burn onto any CDRW discs. it'll read them fine (if i burn them on my other computer)..but it just wont work. it'll read/write regular cdrs with no problem. everything seems to work, except the rewriting/erasing process. i dont think it's particularly a software issue cuz i've tried nero, fireburner, easycd, and even the normal erase function that comes with XP. any ideas?

A couple possibilities:

1) The drive's write laser is close to shot, and perhaps cannot engage into the erase mode.

2) The media that you're using might not be 100% compatible with the drive. Older burners particularly were more picky on the type of media used. Try a different brand of CDRW's if you haven't done so already.

.....and try to use media that are as close to the Red Book spec. as possible; 650 or 700Mb.

But it may be that the laser envelope is too discolored from too many 'active' hours .......

hmm..yeah, i tried using the old 2x maxell cdrw i had from back in the hay day and that worked fine. *sigh* that kinda sucks that it's so picky about what media i can use. but thanks for the troubleshooting possibilities. i guess i didnt need to reformat/reinstall xp ;) learn something new everyday.
