I have an e-machines computer with Windows ME and Intel 633Mhz processor.

I have had Norton 2004 Systemsworks installed for awhile with no problems.

In the past I have accessed the internet by dial-up and never seen any problems on my Norton.

This weekend I installed a USB 2.0 card (previously had 1.0), and installed a wirless adapter, and now connect to the internet over my wireless connection (fed from wirelss router which is fed from cable internet).

My internet connection works fine and no problems noted after this upgrade.

However my Norton antivirus definitions are not up to date. I tried to update them and I got error LU1844 - error when running Live Update. And the virus definitions have a red X indicating they did not update.

I checked items listed in sections 1 - 8 at Symantec website as listed below:

section 1 - restarted computer and retired Live Update, same error.

section 2 - verified all program updates are installed, the only thing Live Update tells me is needed is virus definitions (but every time I run Live Update they do not update, but instead I get the error).

section 3 - ran automated support assistant (is that thing affected by a wireless router?). It identified two errors 1 - virus definitions not up to date (no kidding!) and 2 - my computer was set by the OEM to audit mode which prevent Norton from installing properly! (This is a surprise to me because I haven't had problems before and I have run automated assistant before without this error being identified). I let automated assistant fix my audit mode and then it was happy (only one error = virus definitions)>

section 4 - Update Programs - doesn't seem applicable since programs indicate up-to-date (same as section 2).

section 5 - repair Symantec Program with automated tool. Followed instructions and ran the tool and rebooted. Tried to perform LiveUpdate and got same results (it cannot update virus definitions).

*** Section 6 - increase disk drive space. The instructions tell me that I am OK as long as I have 150MB available. They tell me to check it using file explorer. I have 2.50 GB shown for my C: drive in file explorer. I also noticed from msinfo32 system summary that I have 2.0GB virtual memory and 1.94GB Page File space. I don't know what these thigns are but I wonder if these things are reducing my available hard drive space? Do I need to clear off some space (difficult to do) to see if that makes a difference?

Section 7 - NA - I don't have HelpSpot or FirsAid

Section 8 - NA - I don't have Cyrix Processor

Still have sections 9 left. I will do it and report the results. Don't want to do section 10 (remove and reinstall Norton) unless I have to.

Something tells me this it to big a coincidence to be unrelated to my new computer configuration. What do you guys think? Any suggestions?

Well, I did section 9 which is some kind of special definition download/install. It took a little longer but it worked.

I'm not sure why all of a sudden Live Update doesn't work, but at least I have a way to update my virus definitions now.

I just noted my link above is incorrect. I'll correct it when I get a chance in case anyone is interested in trying to understand my discussion.
