I'm trying to re-install IE5.5. I keep getting the message that that version is already installed.

It won't uninstall using MS, or Norton Uninstall and I've even use RegClean. Even thought there are no IE directories on the system there seems to still be enough pieces of IE5 to not let me reinstall.

Any ideas of how to completely clean IE out so I can reinstall?

MORE INFORMATION

For additional information about problems that can occur if you do not quit all running programs before uninstalling Internet Explorer 5.5, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q165646 Program Settings Lost After Internet Explorer Setup or Uninstall
When you install Internet Explorer 5.5 over Internet Explorer 5 or Internet Explorer 5.01, its uninstall behavior varies depending on whether the Internet Explorer uninstall information (used to restore the version of Internet Explorer prior to 5 or 5.01) is present and whether the Internet Explorer 5.01 installation created minor version uninstall information for Internet Explorer 5.

If uninstall information is present when you install Internet Explorer 5.5, the uninstall process restores the computer to the version of Internet Explorer that is contained in the uninstall information (either the version installed before Internet Explorer 5 or 5.01 or Internet Explorer 5 or 5.01). However, if no Internet Explorer uninstall information is present when you install Internet Explorer 5.5 over Internet Explorer 5 or 5.01, the uninstall restores Internet Explorer 5 or 5.01 on the computer.

This chart lists the various upgrade scenarios and the Internet Explorer 5.5 uninstall behavior that can occur in each situation:
Previous version Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5
information Uninstall Results

Internet Explorer 3.x N/A Internet Explorer 3.x
Internet Explorer 4.x N/A Internet Explorer 4.x
Internet Explorer 5 Present Version installed before

Internet Explorer 5.01 Present See note below

Windows 98 SE (Internet N/A Windows 98 SE (Internet
Explorer 5 Explorer 5)
Windows 2000 (Internet N/A Windows 2000 (Internet
Explorer 5.01 Explorer 5.01)
NOTE: In the case of uninstalling Internet Explorer 5.5 from an upgrade over Internet Explorer 5.01 where uninstall information existed, the computer is restored to the version of Internet Explorer contained within the uninstall information (either Internet Explorer 5 or the version installed before Internet Explorer 5).

For example, you upgrade from Internet Explorer 4.01 directly to Internet Explorer 5. Internet Explorer 5 creates uninstall information to return the computer to Internet Explorer 4.01. You then upgrade from Internet Explorer 5 to Internet Explorer 5.01. Uninstall information already exists at this point, so no new uninstall information is created. Finally, you upgrade to Internet Explorer 5.5. If the uninstall information exists at this point, no new uninstall information is created. Uninstall of Internet Explorer 5.5 in this case returns the computer to Internet Explorer 4.01. If you remove the uninstall information prior to upgrading to Internet Explorer 5.5, however, new uninstall information is created for 5.01. Uninstall of Internet Explorer 5.5 in this case returns the computer to Internet Explorer 5.01.

How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5
Use the following steps to uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 for Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, or Microsoft Windows 2000.

NOTE: You must have administrative privileges to install and uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 in Windows NT and Windows 2000. This includes having administrative privileges the first time you start your computer after installing or uninstalling Internet Explorer 5.5.
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.

On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools in the list of installed programs, and then click Add/Remove.

NOTE: If "Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools" is missing from the list of installed programs, run Setup.exe from your Internet Explorer\Setup folder. If you are running Windows 2000, run "w2kexcp.exe /u" from your "Internet Explorer\IE Uninstall" folder.
