Can't tell if the remote agent is installed!

Hi,

I need to backup my web servers using Veritas Backup Exec (which is installed on a server on my local network). Although the web servers are on a DMZ I understand the remote agent will let you back them up, providing there is a rule that allows the traffic in the firewall.

My problem is that we have licenses for the remote agents (purchased before my time here) but I can't see how to use them in Backup Exec.

If you go to Help / About there are two licenses for the Remote Agents. However, under Job Definitions / Job Properties / Selections, Backup Exec Agents says "None" :-(

What should I see if the agent is installed correctly, and how do I backup I remote server (If I can't map a physical drive to it).

Thanks in advance.

Toby

Check the services running on the servers in question. If you have the "Backup Exec Remote Agent for..." service running on them then the agents are installed.
To backup those servers you will need to select the files and folders on those servers you'd like to back up. This is done via your job definitions>remote selections>%server name% check boxes.
If you need to reinstall remote agents (to different servers) this is done from add / remove programs (veritas). I forget the exact wording, but you want to "modify" BE. It will list / allow you to put in license numbers and then you can browse to the servers you want remote agents installed on.
no need to map drives for BE.

Hi Trent,

Thanks for your reply. The Backup Exec Agent is running on the remote server.

The problem is that these servers are not listed under job definitions>remote selections>%server name%. The server in question is on a different subnet, so you cannot browse to it from our local network.

I believe Backup Exec uses normal Windows Net Bios ports (137, 138 and 139) to connect. Is it possible to backup from the web servers without opening these ports and hence creating a security risk?

Thanks again,

Toby

I've found a good page on the Veritas site that describes how to set this up through a firewall -

Unfortunately you have to open about 6 million ports on the firewall for it to work, so I think we're going to go for another solution, eg FTP scripts.
