can't switch from tray 1 to tray 2 when printing s/o's in VP 10

The customer has a Color Laserjet 3500. If there is paper in the manual feed tray/tray 1, the printer will not print sales orders to tray 2 when tray 2 is selected. When the paper is removed from tray 1 it will print from tray 2. There is no problem switching trays when using Microsoft Word or other programs.
