Can't stop USB Device

I suddenly can't stop or eject a USB device (specifically Zip and Floppy). I get the message: "The generic device cannot be stopped right now. Please try again later". AFAIK the device is NOT in use. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? (Toshiba Tecra 9000 upgraded from W98se)

I'd unistall the device and reinstall it. CJ

I didn't install anything for either of these - W2K automatically recognised the devices.
