can't start alert service (arcserve2000 & SP4)

I would like to configure my alert manager, but I can't start the alert service. I can click the green -> , but the service does not start.

what could be the problem??

There is a log file inside the agent. Does it tell you anything?

no, as long as I cant start the service, there is also no log-file.

Did you check the event viewer maybe it has some info that can be helpful. ALso did you try starting it from the service manager.
