This is a very odd issue. Following on from my post regarding connecting to a server whos Terminal Services process stops responding to client connections ( I am in a further bind now that I can finally get onto the server (using Dameware or VNC). Windows is not responding to Restart or Shutdown requests.

All applications (IIS, SQL Server, FTP, etc) on the server, excluding Terminal Services, are working fine.

When trying to shutdown Windows, using Ctrl+Alt+Del or Start>Shutdown, all that happens is that the screen "greys out" a little and sits there. When you click with the mouse it comes back to the desktop as normal.

Interestingly, when looking at the Services dialog the Start/Stop buttons are greyed out for "Terminal Services".

We are logged in as the Servers administrator with full rights, but we get the occasional "Access Denied" message when attempting to do some things.

Could this all be the result of a security update from Microsoft screwing up the server ?

Could be.

I had similar odd issues a few weeks ago when a stupid local admin decided to re-install W2K over the top to fix a problem he hadn't bothered telling me about.

Both Citrix and Terminal services broke, although I didn't have any trouble restarting.

This got me working but very unlikely you are suffering exactly the same problem.

I wasn't clear if you had tried removing and reinstallingTS or not?

Although I guess if you can't restart at present that is moot.

Have you tried stopping each service individually to see if any hang?
