I put together an old 166mhz Compaq Deskpro 6000 series with a compaq fs151 monitor and an older Matrox video card.
However, I cannot get the display to set to 256 colors. It keeps giving me an error on startup that the video settings are incompatable with my hardware.

The problem is, before I reformatted the HD I had it a 256 colors.

I have tried numerous driver downloads with no luck.

Anybody got advice?

Some driver installs must be accomplished from a CD or floppy install rather than a driver upgrade. Do you have the original documentation and install stuff that you can refer to? Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Unfortunately I do not have original docs. I can't even tell where the model number on the Matrox Video card is.

metsey,
You need the right drivers for the video card.

If you have to, pull the video card and examine it for the model name / number.

You can find the drivers on the NET many ways,,,,, try GOOGLE search engine,,,,,,,,,,

Google search engine terms (to try)

Matrox (* MODEL NUMBER ), Windows 98 (or 95) drivers download

See what you come up with.........

Good luck.
