Hi,

I'm having problems sending email to a group of people @myfloridahouse.gov from my exchange server. I keep getting an NDR that says:

The e-mail account does not exist at the organization this message was sent to. Check the e-mail address, or contact the recipient directly to find out the correct address.

I know that email addresses are good because I can email them from my yahoo account.

I can successfuly ping myfloridahouse.gov from my computer, I can also tracert myfloridahouse.gov

Are there any settings on my exchange server that I can adjust resolve this problem?

Rgds.

Rene

This is a problem which appears to be more and more common. I've had similar issues in the past as well. If I were in your shoes I would try and get in touch with a sys admin from myfloridahouse.gov. Maybe mail from your domain is being blocked at their end. If that's the only domain you are having a problem with then I think it's worth a try. Before you do that I would download smtpdiag (do a google search for it). It's a cool command line tool that lets you run a test smtp connection from your domain to another one. It's very easy to use and will give you some helpful information. Best of luck!

More than likely your issue is related to RDNS problems. An increasing number of domains require that an RDNS lookup of your IP resolve to your domain name.

Visit and perform an RDNS lookup by entering your public IP. If it returns an error, speak with your ISP to get the RDNS record fixed.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Markdmac is most likely right about the RDNS and domains requiring your IP to resolve to your domain name, but there is a way around it.

To get around this you have to configure Exchange to send to that domain via your ISP's smtp server.
You can create a new SMTP connecter in your Exchange System Manager - right click on Connectors - Add New SMTP Connector.

Select 'Forward all mail through this connector to the following smart hosts' and in this field put in your ISP's SMTP server. i.e. smtp.yourisp.com

Under Localbridgeheads - select your Exchange server.
On the Address Space tab click Add - SMTP.
Email domain enter: *myfloridahouse.gov
Cost: 1

You should now be able to send emails to that domain.

that's really not a good workaround, though, as the RFC requires you to have a valid PTR record anyways. Using a smarthost is just skirting the rules. Far more ISPs are blocking mail for no PTR record.

Hi

Thanks for all your help, I a lready talked to the IT dept. at myfloridahouse.gov and they assured me that they are not blocking emails from my domain.

I did a RDNS for my public ip address and this is what I got:

Answer:
My public ip address PTR record: h-my pubic ip address.lsanca54.covad.net. [TTL 3600s] [A=my public ip address]

Is this what I should have?

No - you should have a record that mentions your domain name, such as mail.domain.com. Have your ISP create the PTR record.

The issue has been resolved, I followed 58sniper's advice, called my ISP and they created a PTR record for me. I'm now able to send messages to myfloridahouse.gov

Thanks to all for your help.

Rgds.
