Can't send msgs>1420 chars on Mac

I can't find help on this anywhere. I've just installed version 5.1.1 on my G3 Mac and after much detective work, I've found that messages of more than 1420 characters get 'stuck' on send.

I get a useless message in the Task Progress dialog box that says :

"I said: DATA
and then the SMTP server said: "
