We have several Rs6000s - all but one can communicate to remote users using mail/mailx, but one server won't conform. I've searched the man pages, but there's no great detail on 'mail user1@server'
Anyone any ideas ?
TIA ;-) Dickie Bird

I should add that I can ping and rlogin OK to the remote server. Dickie Bird

Dickie,

Bad news mate I'm afraid.... You need to start looking at the sendmail.cf file....

This file is written in what looks to be greek... But the comments in there are reasonable. Have a look, on a machine that works, at the mail forwarding host in the .cf file. Then go to machine that doesn't work, it will probably not be set - or be set incorrectly. Mike

Is that a haiku?
I never could get the hang
of writing those things.

Hey - do a diff on the two files from the servers in question - even works for Greek!

Efkaristo - that's Greek too (you probably knew !)
No joy though - the differences are many and confusing. The versions of sendmail.cf are different (1.68 and 1.57).
Could this be a cause ?
Couldn't see any remote hosts in any of the the sendmail.cf file either.

do you know if the sendmail.cf file was produced using the m4 files? if so, you could get the original m4 file and compile it to get a working sendmail script ...

Jad - I don't know if it had anything to do with any m4 files. Seems a bit risky, this recompile ????

umm ... not recompiling sendmail, compiling the m4 files to create a sendmail.cf file ...

look around and see if you have any '.mc' files, may be in /usr/lib/mail/cf ... but that might just be solaris.
