can't send E-mail with Direct PC connection

I have my mail servers correctly configured, but can't send E-mails. This seems to be the only problem with the connection. Everything else seems to work correctly. Anyone else with a satellite hookup had this problem before? This is my first satellite hookup and it's rather embarrasing that such a simple problem should stump me. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

kinda need a bit more info on this....could be anything,
please state some more info...like if you are using Exchange, what the end user is using, how many users, what the error message is, what OS the Mail servers are using etc...

The system I'm sending with:
Win 2000 server
outlook express
modem+satelite connection 2 different devices one sends one recieves.
brand new install of OS
the OS of the mail server is unkown
the e-mail account setup has been confirmed as correct.
I suspect the problem is on the E-mail server side.
perhaps some kind of setting or what not.

I have no access to the mail server, but if somebody else has run into this before and know what it is, I might be able to get the server admin in this two shack town to make a change or two. also interested in wheather or not anyone here has setup a connection like this before.
