Can't see streaming videos

A friend of mine told me that when he downloads a streaming video from the internet he can hear the sound but cannot see the video. He has an ATI Radeon 9000 video card on an XP computer. Any ideas why this would happen?

Doesn't have the correct codec installed for the video, that's my guess.

Have him upgrade Windows Media Player to at least 7.1, but 9.0 is preferred.

It would help to know whether he is using Media Player or something else like RealPlayer.
