I have a report open V10, linked to SQL SERver.

I wanted to create an SQL Expresiion but they
don't appear in the 'Field Explorer'

why would this be?

Thanks

Probably a silly question but have you actually created it and saved the SQL expression?

Also what are you trying to do with it, e.g insert it into the select expert, into another formula etc..

No I havn't created an sql expression
because I can't see them in the 'field explorer'
to create?

I have never used them before, so i thought i'd have
a try, ?

I think the option only appears if you are using a compatable datasource (such as SQLServer), what are you using?

I've got Crystal 10. I seldom create SQL expressions, but I am sure the box is always there.

I also can't see any way to create them without starting from that box. Except possibly choosing 'New@ on SQL Expressions from the Formula Workshop. But if SQL expressions are not there at one level they may also be missing elsewhere.

I'd suggest checking your options.

Ok, my report links to a stored procedure
you have to have a table already as a data source,
I thought it would be basic.
thanks[blush]

Mind you, I see they are still unavailable if
i have a stored procedure and a table as a data source,

very suspect.

As far as I know, you cannot use SQL expressions with stored procedures or with reports that use more than one datasource.

If you want to experiment with them, you can always use the Xtreme database that comes with CR.

I think that if a StoredProc is in the report then the SQL expressions will not be available as an option. You would have expected them to be there if there a table and a StoredProc but this does not seem to be the case (at least on CR9 which is my current version).

As you are using a stored procedure could you amend this rather than using a SQL Expression in the report ?

That's what I will now do, ... I am not a fan of crystal
Thanks.

In defence of Crystal (and it is not the only reporting tool I use) it is better at presentation but the best method is to have the data in the correct format first and this is where your SQL Server DBAs help along with Stored Procs and Views.

I find crystal unreliable, a small but significant
portion of the supposed functionality doesn't
work or is foible ridden, you're quite right..
back to sql server.
