can't see spaces when I type spaces

Hi,

I'm an Illustrator beginner. I'm much more familiar with Photoshop. I have created a document and am using the text tool but when I type a space between words, the space does not show up on my display. Have tested keyboard - space bar works fine in other programs. What is the issue I am missing? Need more info?

Does this happen with all fonts? Some fonts have really weird spacing, especially ones downloaded from the internet. At any rate, the distance between letters is known as tracking. In print there are basically two types of tracking (spacing) EN spacing, which is a space that is the width of that fonts letter "n" and EM spacing which the width of that fonts letter "m". Try selecting the text in question and playing with the tracking settings in the Character dialogue box. The keyboard shortcut is alt+left or right arrows. BEHOLD!
