We have just moved a 411 server from one of our depts. that is down sizing so they are retiring the server and will soon have access to our network thru VPN but now want their data on our server.I brought the 411 server to our shop and plugged it in to our network and added IP to it but can't see it or ping it.It can ping itself but that is it.It is and old compaq proliant and the nic doesn't have activity lights on it but we know the server worked right up to the time we picked it up.Have changed ports and I do get a light on the switch so I know it is working. We are running windows 2000,2003 servers as well as Netware. Thanks in advance.

It was already running IPX before we moved it.I just added IP to make sure we had all the bases covered. Can you just plug a different Netware server into a network enviroment without adding it to a tree and just see it?

Yep, Netware 4.x servers cannot communicate over IP, only IPX. The only reason to add IP to a NetWare 4.x server is for printing purposes.

Even so, if you have correctly configured IP on it, you should still be able to ping it. If it can ping itself, I would suggest checking details like the subnet mask and default gateway to ensure they are configured correctly.

From a Client point of view, your Novell Client will need to be custom installed to include IP & IPX as protocols otherwise you cannot communicate with the NetWare 4,x server. I trust your network is configured with IPX running? Also, I would doubt it very much if you could get IPX working over a VPN too?!?!

Thanks TheLad for the help.I did have the subnet mask wrong so I changed it and rebooted the server and although you said 4.11 only use IP for printing I was able to ping it and the server showed up in the search of computers. Not that I need it because I'm already copying the data as we speak but where do you set the default gateway with 4.11?Also they won't be useing the 4.11 server over the VPN.They will only access documents over the VPN on our Netware 6.0 server and Groupwise. The 4.11 server will be retired. Thanks again.

either in the autoexec.ncf

type edit autoexec.ncf
look for a line that says bind blah blah

if it's not there then it has been removed using inetcfg

to get into to this - type load inetcfg

remember this is netware - you dont reboot them

I did say that IP on NetWare 4.x can only be used for printing but I did also say that you should be able to ping the server if it has an IP Address configured on it ;) You cannot use IP as a communication protocol on NetWare 4.x as it only communicates via IPX
