My other half is running Windows XO Pro SP3. She had offline files enabled to a shared folder on my Windows 7 machine. All working just fine then suddenly today she can't see any files saved on my machine in the last week. Possibly since a bunch of recent windows updates arrived recently. But that could be a red herring.

We have disabled offline files on the XP machine and also (wisely or not?) emptied the C:\windows\CSC folder.

We are now in the absurd situation that she can navigate to the shared folder and see all files created up to but not since Feb 22 and she can create a new file, which she can see until I change its name on my Win 7 machine when for her it disappears!

What can we try next?

Have you tried removing the Sharing on the Shared Folder and then recreating the Share with the appropriate permissions? Also look at the actual NTFS Access Permissions of the Shared Folder and Files (via the Security Tab). Make sure they are suitable for your Wife to access them.

Is there any Firewall or security program interfering with access?

I'll try re-creating the share tomorrow, but I am sure that the permissions are correct as I can see everything on a Win 7 netbook just fine. Only XPs Firewall is running and File and Printer sharing is permitted. Be sure I will report back.

Since adding offline files to this folder she seems to have hit some limit to the number of files she can see. I am convinced we have to reset something to do with offline files or network files on her machine. But what?

Steps taken so far.

Recreated share - no effect.

Created NEW share and copied problem folder over - she can still only see 109 of 131 files in that folder. I then deleted the 109 files she can see and lo and behold she can see the others! So I tried copying over files from the old to the new shared folder in chunks and she can see 92 files - when the 93rd file is copied she can see that but loses one of the others! It seems thereafter to get stuck at seeing only a random selection of 92 of the files!

BTW - Pressing F5 has no effect either.

Please bear in mind a Windows 7 netbook can see all the files.

I'm wondering if there is a setting in the registry that needs changing?

Being a bit more awake than late last night and having a better idea of what the issue is I was able to search a bit more effectively and it seems it is a problem with Avast version 6.0.1000. There is a beta version available 6.0.1086 - I'm not sure whether to try that or just wait for the update?

I just got an email from Avast - they have a fix in beta that will be released soon, maybe today!

I guess we'll wait. I'll let you all know what happens

Updated to Avast 6.0.1091 this morning - problem sorted. We did her XP machine 1st and then my Win 7 PC - funnily enough it was the update to Win 7 that fixed the issue. Which is odd because the netbook had no problems seeing all the files. But then that is still running Avast v5. So I can only conclude that the issue with v6.0.1000 is particular to an XP machine looking at files on a Win 7 machine also running v6.0.1000.
