Can't see my web site

I am trying to learn how to host my own website. I have setup a web server using Win2K Server.
I have a static IP.
I have a Linksys BEFSR81 Router.

I have set the IP to point to the Router. I have given the server a static IP that is in line with the Router (192.168.1.x). I have set the Forwarding to point to this IP address.

For Primary DNS I am using my ISP who is SBC.
For Secondary DNS I am using register.com which is where my domain is registered.

At register.com I have set Domain alias and when I ping it I can see the ip address. When I ping my website (

http://www.mytestweb.com)

I can see the ip address.

However, when I go to the browser and type

http://www.mytestweb.com

or even type my static IP address that my ISP gave me I do not get to the website.

Any ideas as to what I have done wrong?

Are you running the web server on port 80?

Most ISPs block port 80 so their customers don't run their own web servers. Most people just change the port the web server is running on (in your case you're probably using IIS).

Two common ports that people run their web servers on other than 80 are 8080 and 8000.

If you change your port you would have to write your web address like this:

http://www.myTestSite.com:8080

http://www.myTestSite.com:8000

I think companies like register.com have free port forwarding, so it shouldn't matter which port you're running the web server on.

or

http://dns2go.deerfield.com//

offer free services which are pretty nice, and they work great with dynamic IPs as well as static.

Thanks for your reply. I tried what you mentioned about using port 8080 but with no results. Here is how i did it:

I did a right-click on the website under IIS 5.0. I clicked the properties. I changed the "TCP Port" to 8080. The "IP Address" is the IP address of the server. The other settings are the defaults.

Next I set "Forwarding" on the Linksys router. I set "Service Port Range" 7~162 to point to the ip address of the server. Then I set "Service Port Range" 8080~8080 to point to the same ip address. The other settings are the defaults.

what am I doing wrong?

I don't know how your Netgear router works but with the Linksys I set the forwarding up correctly. I needed to set each port separately.

When setting up the router, there is a page for "Forwarding". On that page I can forward different port requests to different ip's. For example, I could forward requests for port 80 to the ip of the server where the web site resides.

The page gives me two columns of input boxes so that I can forward several different ports. I forwarded all of the ports to my server by using only the first row. When I forwarded each port separately everything worked.

I don't know if this will help because I don't know how you setup a Netgear router.

Once I can access the website through the dynamic IP, then I plan on using dynamic DNS.

My ISP is attbbi cable. I can ping the dynamic IP address from a computer external to my NAT LAN.

And I have tried using ports 80, 8080, 8000, and 8008.

Your problem sounds just like mine, have you solved it yet?

I have solved my problem. Yours is different from mine in that I have a static ip from my provider where as with cable you don't. I was able to assign that static ip to my router.

I am learning, also, so I doubt if I will be of any more help.

Dynamic IP shouldn't be an issue, since it acts like a static IP until its changed. What did you do to solve your problem?
My goal is to contact my website via an external computer by entering the dynamic IP address into the browser, once this is accomplished, I'll use a dynamic DNS service to correlate the dynamic IP address with my URL.

I had to change my DNS records so that they pointed to my static ip. This is where I think that you may have a problem. There are places like TZO.com that can take care of this problem.

Again, you are walking at the edge of my knowledge but I am more than happy to tell you what I know.

I see where that could fix the URL problem in the bowser, but I don't see how that would have fixed the problem when you entered the static IP address into the bowser. Maybe I'll jump ahead with the dynamic DNS service from no-ip.com or TZO.com.

I am unable to figure out why I cannot access HTTP server from Internet via the linksys router. Any help is appreciated. Below are the details.

1. I can access HTTP server internally.
2. I can access HTTP server from internet if I remove the router and connect DSL MODEM (WestTell) directly to machine.
3. I cannot access my HTTP server from internet with router.

Unless you have a specific reason for wanting the router to respond to a ping, "Block WAN Requests" should be Enabled. If it responds to a ping, it is a target for anyone doing a ping sweep.

Note that if you disable "stateful packet inspection" (SPI), you are turning off part of the firewall protection? The router will still be doing NAT, I believe. I don't have a V2 router so I am not sure about the effects.

Is your ISP blocking port 80? Many of them do. If so, try forwardiong a port like 8080 and access the web server using a URL like

http://mywebserver.com:8080.

I talked to a women on the linksys site and did what she told me to do. (they could not figure it out). Thanks for the tips on Block WAN Request and SPI. I will reenable them.

Nope the ISP is not blocking 80, since if I connect the DSL modem directly to my computer without the router I can access port 80 across the WAN. Something to do with the router setting or perhaps the new firmware has a problem?

I assume that I should be able to access the web server from outside the LAN. I am missing something and not sure what...??

The the problem turned out to be that I had Filtered
Private Port Range: 1024 to 65535. Changing this back to 0 enabled access to the web server from outsite the LAN. We turned the filter off and on several times to be absolutly sure, and that appears to be the problem.

I did not pursue this too far, but my guess is that this is a signed/unsigned int bug. Thanks for your help theOldMan346.

I have the same problem. I set up my website to use port 8080.
I can access the site locally or from anywhere using a cable modem connected directly.

I an using no-ip.com

BUT when I connect via my linksys router altho I can see the website locally I cannot see it from outside my LAN.

I set up forwarding in Lynksys to point to mt linksys address 192.168.1.4
Any suggestions welcome.
