Sometimes I can't see images, I just get the x. I'll try to load just that image file and I can't see that.

I can see most images, most of the time. On my.yahoo.com I can see all of the images except the cartoons at the bottom (I don't care about the cartoons, just giving an example). On buy.com I can't see the images they use for buttons or the product images.

I have gotten a full set of Windows updates (according to the MS auto-update site). I have reinstalled IE several times. I have searched here and googled around and not found other reports of similar behavior that weren't fixed by these actions.

Any suggestions as to what I should try to take care of this? Or what steps I should take to document this so folks have a better idea of what's going on?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Jeremy

There is no "killer" fix for this.

Bill,

Thanks. That's a big ole thread, and it looks like it will be a big ole help. I'll have to do some serious reading. Hopefully I'll find the answer in there.

Sorry.

Best advice (condensed) for WinXP:

. Microsoft November 2003 Cumulative Patch for IE and
Windows 2000 (Q824145) It does introduce other issues, such as an annoying change in scroll-bar behavior. I expect a fix very soon for this.

. The IE, View, Encoding choices does help. I have had relatively fewer problems choosing "Auto Select", and then "Western European ISO"

I note that this can, and im my experience, will be reset through a javascript on some web pages.

. Make sure your MS and Sun java installations are working well. a Google "Group" search on 'test xp java' will yield you a ton of sights to make sure it is working properly.

Other than this, I remain as clueless as you. But the above steps do help a great deal.

Best,
Bill Castner

Bill,

Wait, I'm sorry if you took anything I wrote to be complaining about having to sift through all of that. I actually rewrote that short post a couple of times trying to avoid that, but I guess I missed. I meant the thanks, and the star, sincerely. It's a lot of stuff to sift through, but I don't expect you to do that kind of work for me. That said, thank you again for doing some of that sifting.

My best to you Jeremy,

I took no offense, but was offering sympathy.

Bill

Ah. I guess I'm really _not_ reading straight. Glad to hear I hadn't offended you.

Off to hunt for a fix.

You might try my "little" ie fix: thread608-752451
It sorts various IE issues.

Bill,

Some guy with the obnoxious handle of NaturalBornKiller mentioned that he went to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC and renamed hosts to hosts.sav. I tried this. Worked!!! Now I just have to reinstall norton antivirus! Oh, man I'm happy about this.

Thanks for all your help.

The HOSTS file is important. The little utility I discuss here will, along with other things, make sure that the base entries are correct: faq779-4625
