So I have a server x64 2008 with a sata2 software raid card, Silicone Image 3124 PCI-X card connected to a raid chassis with multi-channel sata splitters that do 5-to-1. So I got these 5 terabyte drives and put them in the chassis. They showed up as individual drives, and I let them spin for about a week before setting up the raid. So then I set up the raid, but something about it disagreed, so I deleted the raid, but I can't get the individual drives to show back up in disk manager. I even put one of the drives in another machine, converted it back to MBR and repartitioned it and formatted it. I then stuck the drive back in the raid chassis, but it still won't show this drive, or any of the drives. I have since put one of the drives in a workstation where it is working fine as a D:. My raid chassis has 12 slots, 10 of them are raid and the last 2 are singles. I can't even get the drives to show up in the single slot. However, I was able to get the drive to show up by connecting it externally via USB. I then formatted it and whatnot, and it worked fine, but when I stick it back in the chassis, it fails again. I'm completely confused on this. I swap drives around in this thing all the time, but as soon as I raid the drives, I can't get them to behave as singles again. This happened once before too, but I didn't try to troubleshoot it.

I would investigate if there are any firmware or BIOS updates for the RAID card. Also verify that the RAID card can use drives as big as you have purchased.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark
