cant save an image as a .jpg, help!

I know I am in a totally inappropriate part of the cyberspace, but can anyone help me? My new XP computer wont allow me to save an image as a .jpg, only a bitmap. What do I need to put on my hard drive to do this?

Where do I get it?

You need to install a software that supports the .jpg format.

i've also found that when surfing websites and going to save images, if there's say login information or other 'pre' arguments in the address (

http://joe:blow@www.abcdefg.com/

OR in a secure site that images will not save properly as the right format, 2 easy ways about this... save the bmp and convert it, or surf your temp web folder and just fetch the file

More details would help...

Hate to state the obvious but.... in Paint (mspaint.exe) you can click on file --> save as and then click the drop down box next to "save as type", JPG should be there.
