I am backing up a Windows NT4 file server and all seems well with Arcserve. The job completes successfully with no skips and all sessions are visible when scanning the media. However, when I try to merge or restore from any session other than 1 it cannot find session and fails. I have tried re-installing and I have replaced the tape drive (DDS4), any suggestions welcome.

Thanks.

what version of arcserve are you using?

Also, have you tried using a restore by backup media? It doesn't use the sessions that way. Use filters though or else it will restore everything on the media...

I am using 6.5 build 620. Thanks for the tip, i'll give it a go.

The majority of restores I have to do are single file restores. I sthere a way I can exclude "ALL" and include a single file?

Cheers.

You just specify the include with the file name that you want to restore. No need to specify exclude ALL because it is exclusive.

What I have tried is:

Set a job up to restore from media.
The file I wanted to restore is on D: so included the file on D:
I didn't select session 2 because as soon as the backup job try's to locate session 2 or 3 the job disconnect's from media and fails. I thought that if I left it on session 1 and added an include for 2 it would just continue through the tape.
When the backup started it started restoring C:. I don't know of anyway to eclude a volume so added an include for a small directory on C:. The underlying problem is still the fact that I don't know how to restore the whole tape with filters. I have to select a session to submit the restore.

HELP ME PLEASE.

Go to "restore by backup media" select a filter to "include" and then type the filename only, no path...

so for calc.exe it would be

include file pattern "calc.exe"

not

include file pattern "c:\winnt\calc.exe"

Hopee this helps.

The problem is that the restore by media option does not restore the whole tape, you have to select a session. If I could select the whole tape and include a file with filtering it may work. Any ideas? Thanks for the help so far.
