Can't restore contacts after reinstall of server

After a system crash we had to rebuild our NT server and install Exchange fresh. Using our backup tapes we (eventually) managed to restore all the users old emails but the contact books and calendars do not restore.

We have used Arcserve for backing up and have done both a brick backup and a database backup.

Is there a way to restore the contact books and calendars without overwriting the emails that we have already restored ?

Now that they have their mailboxes back, have you tried restoring the IS to a restore server and then using Exmerge to just get the Calendar and Contact info?
