can't remove complately sql server

I have installed ms sql server 2000 dev edition 1 year ago.
After using it 3 month i uninsalled it. But know i just trying to install the setup which consist ms sql server desktop edition.And setup fails.I searched over internet i found out that i couldn't install Sql server second time.if you want to install it by force, you must delete some registry entries from register,servise and some files from prog files directory.And i did all but i can't install desktop edition again.Is there has some utilites for it?.or give me some instruction for it.

You dont actually need to remove the other versions of SQL, the reason why you cant install it is I would guess you arent supplying an instance name.
try installing MSDE from a command line prompt using something like.

setup.exe MySQlInstance

This will then install a new version of MSDE on your machine \\machinename\MySQLInstance
I have SQL 2000 Dev on my machine and 3 instances of MSDE, so I know there isnt a problem.

There might be a problem installing SQL if you removed something that is necessary to properly install new programs.

If hmckillop's solution doesn't work, please post the exact point in install that the problem occurs and what is occurring. I.E., does it just stop & freeze, does it bomb out and an error come up? Detailed information on the point where it is having problems would help us verify what kind of issue this is.
