Problem:
My mail server only relays mail to the local (mail) server if I'm trying to any other (e.g. hotmail.com) it only responds with, user unknown.

I can't even send e-mail to another server with pine from the mail server (user unknow error). Anyone know what's the problem, sendmail configurtation or DNS??? othervise the server works fine. it's a redhat 7.3.

What do u mean by "Relaying mail to HOTMAIL.COM??"
Would u elaborate more on what exactly is the problem??

hotmail, yahoo kinda mail engines will never allow anybody to relay mails through their servers..
I guess u r trying to send mails to hotmail.com.. is it?

For sending mail to internet servers or any other network, U need to hav MX entry record of your mail server in the DNS.. In case you want to send mail to hotmail, hav MX entry of your mail server in your ISP's DNS..

This should work..

All the best..

Sounds like a dns issue. You didn't say if your server was giving the error or the other servers. It makes a difference. If it is coming from the other servers, then they can't find your dns "MX" record. If it is your own server, it is because it doesn't know it is mail.yourdomain.com. It just thinks it is localhost.localdomain. In this case, you will need to set your domain name as the host in the network configs. By default RedHat configures sendmail to only allow outgoing mail. You may need to set it up to allow incoming and relaying.
