Hi, one of my users here at work has the latest version of Acrobat reader and for some reason when he tries to click on a .pdf file, it gives only a small red X in the upper lefthand corner. However if he saves it locally, he can read it just fine. Any reason why this would be and how to fix this?

Are you talking about Acobat Reader or opening the PDF in Internet Explorer? Is he on a mac or pc? Mac's don't seem to be able to view pdf's from Explorer, The users have to download the pdf before opening it.

Hi Marcus, they are PC users running Windows XP Professional SP1 with Internet Explorer. This would be actually opening the PDF in IE.

There could be several reasons for this. I have had this problem and my problem was that the PDF was made with a program called "Corel Draw", the error i got was cannot read linear data or something like that. If this is your problem you have a workaround and a fix.

The fix is to resave the pdf from acrobat and then repost the pdf onto your site.

The workaround would be to open acrobat click "edit" then "preferences" then find "Allow fast web view" under "internet" and uncheck it.

It could also just be your install. If its that you could try to reinstall or you may have to uninstall all versions of acrobat and reinstall all of them starting with the oldest one first.
