Hi,

For some unknown reason, Windows Media Player 11 will no longer play DVD's.

I have rolled back to Player 10
Reinstalled Player 11
Restarted computer
Removed Media Player from Windows Components and also Add/Remove programmes

The Media Player will play WMV's, MP3's and CD's but not DVD's

I am using Windows XP

Any suggestions guys?

Thank you

Have you tried troubleshooting the CD/DVD driver?

Cogito eggo sum – I think, therefore I am a waffle.

What does it do when you attempt to play a DVD?

Perhaps the codecs got corrupted, installing a Codec pack may solve the problem.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

As mentioned:

check to see if the drive can read DVD's, e.g. insert a DVD and then navigate to the DVD contents, if they display then your drive is able to read DVDs...

Question:

what if any, DVD burning apps are installed?

Solutions, with info given so far:

Vacunita mentions CoDecs, pleas reinstall them, e.g. KLite Codec Package Basic should do... look for them at ...

Windows Media Player 11: Setting up DVD playback

Try another Video Player, such as VLC, Video Lan Client...

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.
Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"

VLC is a great app for playing DVDs, video, audio, etc. Personally, I like WMP better for audio, VLC for video.

Then again, there's WinAmp which I often forget about. It's a great audio player.

I'd suggest trying VLC for the DVDs, regardless of whether you get Windows Media Player working correctly or not.

Hi all

I'm in the office later and will try out your suggestions then post back

Many thanks

Another vote for VLC. Plays just about everything you throw at it without downloading special codecs.

According to research on Google, the VLC.exe file is spyware. Can anyone confirm this is the case?

Vacunita: When I insert a DVD into the drive tray, windows media player 11 opens then the DVD plays for 1 second and stops.

I really dont understand why this would work one minute then not the next.

I have just downloaded Media Player Classic as suggested above and this works great (thank you)

Wish Windows Media Player 11 would though!

Thanks guys

According to research on Google, the VLC.exe file is spyware.

Since when was Google an Antispyware product? What do you mean, according to Google?

There's never been any credible source to claim such that I'm aware of.

Check which codecs you have installed for Media Player:

Go to the Menu (press alt key if its not visible), Help -> About Windows Media Player, in the window that come up click on Technical Support Information at the bottom. This should open up a Browser window with the information. Just scroll down to the Mpeg/DVD section. See what's there.

Copy and Post back here so we may take a look.

Just one another thing, since I recently did a Windows update, I now have "FaroLatino.com : Free Music Downloads" as a command button in the top right hand corner of Windows Media Player. Not sure what that is.

Thank you Ben for the info. I appreciate it and I'll look into it.

To clear up the issue with vlc.exe I found the following whilst researching and as I can see from the posts the software is not spyware so I apologise if my post offended or misled anyone. This is what I found:
Unique Filenames

The file VLC.EXE (Trojan.Downloader-Gen/FakeAlert) has also been observed as the following filenames.

VLC.EXE has an MD5 Hash of : 8106E6708CA28DA521E7D1E0EFEC98B5
