Can't Ping Routers IP

Forgive me for my noobness once again here, but I've been trying forever to setup a 2 way VPN so a friend and I can share files, and I'm still not quite there. We are both using BEFSX41 VPN endpoints. We have setup a VPN Tunnel using a step by step guide from the linksys website. The Linksys VPN setup says we are connected. However we can't share files. This might/might not matter or make sense, but we can each ping each others ISP IP addresses, however we can not ping each others Router IP address. Any help would be great, Also once we finally get it figured out, I understand to access the files we type \\ip address\shared.. but which IP are we suppose to put in there? the one from the router, or the one from the ISP ?

Especially post number 11, which seems to give good detail on how to VPN connect to PCs with your variety of router.

Normally when you have two devices connected by VPN, they will share a LAN addressing segment and when you 'ping' between them, you should be able to use the LAN (private) addresses.

One way to think of it is in a VPN application, you still use your internet gateway to connect to the other devices, but you have a virtual pipe that connects you on the lan level that passes through that connection. When you ping the router (public) IP provided by the IPS, you are still using the Internet routing, but you are hitting the router outside of this virtual pipe.

I really don't know if it is necessary to ping to share files, or if your router supports the operation. From what I read, it looks like your device(s) are designed for the application of connecting two remote PCs as opposed to full VPN, but that should be sufficient for your purposes.
