Hello everyone!
I am in a small business, about 30 worksations I am working with. I am the IT Professional on the premesis, but I have never had to play with any of the Windows Server Systems. We had just file sharing, where you would put your files on one common computer. This is not only insecure, but uneffiecient. So , I am trying a little experiment. I downloaded the 180 day trial of Windows Server 2003, and I installed it. I added the following roles to my server: Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and a couple other ones. Now, the DNS works fine if you try it from the server, but it wont work when you try it on a client computer. I cant even ping the server from a client. But, I can ping everyone in the network that I want from the server! Can someone please help me! Thanks in advance

Flash101,

Active Drectory requires DNS, which in turn requires the server to have a static IP address on the network.

Are you unable to ping the server by name, by IP address, or both?

On your clients, make sure that your new DNS server is listed in thier IP settings.

for example:

IP = 10.10.1.23
Sunet = 255.255.255.0
Gateway = 10.10.1.1
DNS = 10.10.1.10 <--- This is your Windows 2003 server IP

Yes, I have the IP Address 192.168.1.100, and the DNS server is set to listen on that and 192.168.0.1 . I havn't tried pinging "\\flash101\", but I don't see how it would be any different. It seems like something is blocking this computer from the network, because I set the Win2k3 server's DNS on the wireless adapter to 192.168.1.100, and I can get every website I want! I don't understand! Also, the Internet Connection Firewall is turned off. And, to JP, i can't even ping this server, you don't think I've already tried changing their DNS?

I noticed that 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.0.1 are not on the same Class C network. What do you have providing NAT for you LAN? If it's a router, there might be a firewall in place that's preventing access from the rest of your LAN.

Well, heres the story more in depth:
Windows configured my computer to DNS: 192.168.0.1, but my computers static IP was still 192.168.1.100. I have the DMZ Host of the router enabled to 192.168.1.1 . My routers has 192.168.1.x type IP addresses. I think mabey Windows did something to modify my network IP address, because I can ping out onto the network fine, but when I get a ping it just times out!

Flash101,

Is the IP 192.168.0.1 the IP address of your router? What about 192.168.1.1?

It's also not entirely clear if your Server 2003 machine has one network adapter or two. Either way, it sounds like when you ping your server, you're pinging a different IP address than what the server's IP is on the network.

My routers gateway address is 192.168.1.1 . The three computers im using to test this system are on this gateway with 192.168.1.50, 192.168.1.51, and 192.168.1.52. There DNS is currently set to 151.203.0.85, because 192.168.1.100 won't work! The server's network IP is also set to 192.168.1.100, so it should show up on the network. Even stranger is the server (Flash101) shows up on my workgroup, but I can't access it, it says can't find the network address.

Oh yeah, my server has two NIC's - a wireless one and an ethernet card. I only have the wireless one connected right now, should I disable the other one or something?

Flash101,

First off, where did 192.168.0.1 come from? That was in an earlier post.

Second, you're running Active Directory, right? Active Directory depends on DNS being installed and running on the same machine. It doesn't need to be your primary DNS server, but it does need to be a DNS server on your network.

Third, the NetBIOS host names in Network Neighborhood are cached from a file. Computers that are no longer part of the workgroup will continue to show up there after they are removed. Not so strange.

Fourth, your two network cards. Do they both have IP addresses assigned to them? If so, this box could be a gateway. If not, or if you only plan to use only one, disable the other one.

Alright, I got it working. Windows Messed with my IP settings when I installed DNS on it. I fixed it by reinstalling the Wireless USB Adapter software and reset the DNS servers settings. I have a few questions about Active Directory now that I have it running, so check out my next thread on the forums...
