I don't know where to start so here I am. I recently added SMS 2003 trial version to my Windows 2003 Server. I set up some collections and I think that's all.
My problem this week started with users saying they couldn't print to shared printers connected to other machines. This led me down the obvious path of troubleshooting print sharing. Then I found out on accident that I couldn't remote to another XP machine and couldn't even ping it. I expanded my search and found that I can ping only the servers on my WAN but desktops don't answer. If I put in the name of the desktop it can't find the host. If I use the IP then it doesn't respond.
I've removed the trial version of SMS 2003 but I fear the damage is done. This server runs DNS and DHCP and both seem to be in working order, I can release and renew my desktop IP addresses.
Any thoughts wuld be helpful,

Sam

You say that if you ping the IP it does NOT respond and that it is across the WAN? If so, check your DHCP scope has the correct entry for default gateway(003 Router).

The easiest way would be on one of the affected PC's run IPCONFIG /all and ensure all entries are as they should be.

All is as it should be on the ipconfig /all. The machines act fine so far as accessing internet and even renewing addresses. I'm looking at some possibility that the earlier SMS installation made a change in the group policies.

One more thing that you would think points to the DHCP server. If I go static on a workstation I can ping it. How is this related to the mnagement server? I don't know.

This sounds to me like a Windows Firewall Issue. I would bet you lunch that ICMP traffic is disabled so it can't respond to the pings and that Remote Desktop is not selected under the advanced options for the Local Area Connection properties.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

Right on the nose Mark. I had a group policy setup to allow for these exceptions and I think the SMS activation may have made a few changes. Now I get to go back in a hit them again with the firewall exception. Thanks for the help.
