After applying protection to a few cells on a sheet (ie: unlocking all but a few), I can't paste it unlocked cells, nor change their background color, etc. Is this a 'feature' of Excel? Can I get around it?
Which version of Excel are you using? I have 2000 and do not appear to have this issue. If you open another workbook, are you able to paste into a new (unprotected) workbook? For that matter, if you unprotect your current workbook, are you able to then paste?

Using Excel XP on Win XP. If I unprotect the sheet, I can perform all functions regularly. Also, it seems I can copy/paste items from cells on the same sheet, but I can't copy from another sheet and paste onto the protected sheet.
Haven't worked with Excel XP, so cannot offer any insight. A quick look on MS KnowledgeBase did not turn up anything specific to this problem, either. Perhaps someone else has run into it.

I understand you are using Excel XP, I am currently using Excel 2002 and I noticed when clicking on the button to protect the worksheet you can check and uncheck the options you want for changing unprotected cells. One of those options was formatting, i.e. changing colors. You might want to look into that when you click to protect.
trussman,
Thanks for the response - that seems to be the problem.
I set those options when I applied security, but assumed that checking the options would LOCK those operations and unchecking them would UNLOCK them, as the standard is for locking cells. After your tip, I reread the dialog and realized my interpretive mistake. Cheers!
