Hi, all. I have a user who is trying to open a text (.txt) file in Microsoft Excel. She gets an error stating that the file is read-only and cannot be opened. It also suggests that the server the file is on may be down.

She is running Microsoft Office 2000 on Windows 2000. Other users have no problem opening (and converting) these text files which are located on our file server. She can open the file in Notepad, she just seems to have the problem in Excel. Any ideas????

Thanks for the suggestion. However, she has only had this PC for less than a week. (It's brand new.) Also, we were able to open the text files in Excel on another one of the brand new PC's with the same software running on it, and everything worked fine.

I suggest try loggin in as Admin and see if you can open the file. If you can, then something wrong with user profile.

No good. She is an administrator, so there should not be any permissions problems.

Getting frustrated yet? I sure am!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Have you tried logging as yourself to see if the file will open?

I've tried as both of us. Her user name is a member of the Admin group, and I/m using the Administrator ID.

Pardon the broken record...I realize that the PC is new, but please try to clean all your temp files and see if it makes a difference.

Next, find the path to Excel, and in the run command type the path and a space and /regserver
eg. C:\Program files\Microsoft Office\Office\excel.exe /regserver
to register Excel

Ok, I'll give it a try. What would registering the software have to do with anything?

Have you checked the properties from the text file, is the read only file ticked) if so untick read only and try again
