I have a working Windows 98SE system with a Conextant modem on Com2.

I am a complete Linux newbie, and I have just installed Mandrake 9.0, and it functions properly except that Internet connection fails because the modem cannot be opened.

I am using KPPP, and at 'config, modem, query modem' it displays 'Looking for modem...' then 'Sorry, can't open modem'.

In Control Center, the modem is correctly listed in both IO ports and PCI, so
it has been found and identified.

What do I have to do to get Mandrake 9.0 to recognise the modem?

Make sure the user account you are logged in as has access permissions to use the modem.

You may want to set up the modem dialer daemon "pppd" in a more general manner rather than via kppp so it is avilable to all users and you can test establishing the connection as root.

Possibly the simplest way to set pppd up is via the linuxconf tool.
