I received an AI file that when you are in MS explorer, and have the file details on thumbnails can see what the file looks like. When you try and open it, the following comes up

This is and Adobe illustrator file that was saved without PDF content. To place or open this file in other applications, it should be resaved from Adobe Illustrator with the "create PDF Compatible file option turned on. This option is in the Illustrator Native format options dialog box, which appears when saving as Adobe Illustrator file using the SAVE AS command.

It does not appear to change anything. How do I get to the file that is there??

Try creating a new blank illustrator doc and use the Place command on the File menu. Select the doc that was sent to you and see if it places.

Forgot. Also try using the Open command on the illustrator file menu.

JM,
Thanks. I tried but it did not work. Maybe I need to bite the bullet and upgrade to CS2. that is what they were created in.

Thanks again

I recall Illustrator telling me when a document has been created in a newer version so this error may be something else. Don't spend your money yet. Consider asking the other designer to send an alternate format or previous version file.

MrChillin: Jim's right. Under File Menu/Export. Ai gives you the option to save as Illustrator Legacy - with the version you want.

The ref to PDF in yur original post, suggests thatteh original creator didn't select the pdf compatabilty check box in the Ai save window. That's the default so they unchecked it. Have them resave with it checked and see if it opens
