With Acrobat 5 Full and Reader 6 installed, I could not open a .pdf directly, it had to be saved to disk first, then opening the saved file worked. This is a known bug.

So I upgraded to Acrobat 6 Pro, and then both Pro and Reader would not open .fdf at all, either via the browser or on disk. The .fdf files in question open a .PDF located at a http: address, not local.

This is actual error message:
Acrobat could not run the Web browser. Unkown error. (2)

Adobe has no clues why this error appears.

Both Pro and Reader were uninstalled and Reader is just installed now and the error persists.

Any help is extremely appreciated!!! If you're not familiar with .fdf files, please don't respond.

followup:

The same error occurs when clicking on the little Adobe ad in the upper right corner "Search Adobe PDF files"

I've check ActiveX and IE's security settings to make sure they're working/set properly.
