Rebooted my PC with a new motherboard and harddisk and I am using the old harddisk as a slave. With the old hardisk as c drive i had a code to come into my desktop but with the new I didn't bother. My old disk is now F drive but certain files I can't open it says they are protected so I tried uninstalling the old XP on the older hard disk but there is still some folders I can't open because it says they are protected, is there maybe a program I can use or does anyone have some good info. I've tried finding it on FAQ but with what I write there are no hits.

kind regards.......Denis

Hello Linney,
it is a question of permission. I have read the info on the URL you gave me above. But when i hit properties >I can't find the one that says security and i can't find the one that says owner I am using XP professional.
No matter if I hit a music file a word doc. it tells me that I don't have access or that the program ie; windows media player is not able to recognise this file. I can assure that the file are all intakt.

If you are not seeing the security tab, that disk is probably not NTFS but fat32. If it IS NOT ntfs then there are no permissions and no security that would prevent you from getting to those files..there is no security on fat32 volumes unless someone installed a 3rd party product. Have you tried scandisking that disk to make sure you dont have some corruption on that drive?

As I said in my first mail I am using a new harddisk as my master C and the older one is now a slave disk F when I was using the older one as master C on my desktop one had to enter a password to come in so I'm thinking that that is the problem. The files I am trying to open when I hit properties I can see a green tick write protected but I've tried taking this away but it didn't help.

To see your Security Tab, go to Control Panel/ Folder Options/ View, uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)".

Follow the original MSKB article.

The "Read-only" file attribute, as applied to folders in XP (not files) is different than in older 9x installations.

Great stuff!!! That worked with no problems. Use simple file sharing(recommended)should I just leave this alone now.
thanks alot...

Probably. The only time you may want it checked (ticked) might be if you have problems when sharing files on a Lan, especially with older operating systems.
