My computer can't seem to get an ip from my router. I have tried reinstalling the driver for the NIC as well as the tcp/ip stack but still end up with 169.x.x.x after booting. The only error in the event log is one about DHCP not being able to reach the specified service but that is obvious. Everything worked great until last week the cable went out, now this one machine is being picky. The router is fully operational dishing out ips over both the wireless connections and direct CAT5. I have even replaced the CAT5 cable for this PC and used to old one successfully on another computer. Basically I've tried everything I can think of to fix whatever is muddled inside of there but with no results. I'm on the verge of reinstalling the whole damn OS but backing up 60 gigs of data prior to doing so isn't really that appealing. An iteresting thing to note is the presence of multiple instances of 'WAN Miniport (NetBUEI Dial-In), #2, #3, etc.' as well as the 'dial-out' version of the same. I can't seem to get rid of these however because the system says they are 'required for boot'. Did I mention that there isn't even a dial-up adapter in this machine? wtf...yay M$... I'm assuming the fix for this is going to be a reg hack of some sort but i cant find any resources out there. please help!!
