Can't logon anymore

Please i'm in a jam could someone help me out. Our LAN is only 10 clients w/95 with novell4.11 all of a sudden nobody can't login anymore. I rebooted the server and seems to go fine and then it says "Directory Services: could not open local database". The message appears on the server dos prompt. What would cause this? I really need to get into the data store on the server, please help, thanks so much.

All i really want is to be able copy 2GBS of information from a folder on the sys volume. Please help, thanks.

Sounds like you ran a DSMAINT, or a hardware upgrade in INSTALL.NLM recently??? These actions lock the DS database and if not unlocked properly will cause the problem and error's you are experiencing. Try unloading and reloading the DS.NLM by typing "unload ds, load ds". Bring up the server with "SERVER -NDB" (no database), Load DSREPAIR, in Advanced Options menu | Repair local DS database, with Check Local References and Rebuild Operational Schema set to Yes. Save the repaired database, then Esc to unlock DS.
More often then not, this will resolve a "Could not open local database" problem. -Hope this helps.

Thanks CiscoTech, I already did the routine you mentioned with no luck. Gives error stating "Directory Services remains locked". I really need to retreive files from the sys volume. Is there any software that lets you extract or copy the files from NDS to a different location? thanks

Alright i got the ds up again, but none of the clients can't login is there anything on the server to enable the clients to logon, thanks

Thanks andyrne, but i found out that the nic card is not recongize by novell anymore. I do inetcfg and load install does not show up at all. If i need to replace the nic card is it fairly simple. Do i just install new nic and then go to load install, thanks.

Yes, install the new NIC and load install and install the correct drivers for the card.
