Hello,

I really don't know a whole lot about networking. I need to connect into a Domain using WinXP Pro. I can do it with Win98. In Win98 I have a LMHOSTS file that contains 209.20.183.62 smidnt1 #PRE #DOM:smid

On win98 I have the windows username and password be the same as the domain username and password. Then I have the dail-up (modem) to "log on to network". Then I have access to the shared drives.

I don't know how to do it in WinXP Pro. I'm really lost. It seems like I've tried everything. I've put the LMHOSTS file in the proper folder I believe. I've type in the domain but it won't connect, it says I have the wrong username and/or password. Maybe someone would know how to manually setup this so I can avoid the LMHOSTS file?

Thanks for any help,
Bryan

The lmhost file is in Windows/System32/Drivers/etc/lmhost. Ensure the you have not used the lmhost.sam extension because this will not work ("you must rename it without the .sam extension and you will have to reboot"). When you rename the file it should just be lmhost. You might have to go into folder options to get the extension to go away when you rename it. Also ensure that during the login process you are authenticating through the domain and not the local settings. This is done at the login under options and domain. If you domain is running active directory or DNS you should be able to do away with the LMHOST file.
