Hi All,

I've just installed recommended patches onto a Solaris 10 box (FJS Primepower450), after which the machine doesn't boot anymore. The error message is:

Executing last command: boot /pci@83,4000/FJSV,ulsa@2,1/disk@0,0:a
Boot device: /pci@83,4000/FJSV,ulsa@2,1/disk@0,0:a File and args:
SunOS Release 5.10 Version Generic_118822-25 64-bit

WARNING: mod_load: cannot load module 'devfs'
(Can't load devfs) Program terminated

What has happened here? I guess some patch has loaded a wrong kernel module, which doesn't recognize the device tree or something. Is it possible to (1) find out in some logs what exactly got updated, and (2) unload manually the faulty module + rebuild the tree? Please mind that the only way I can access the machine is to boot from cdrom into single-user, then manually mount the hard drive (which is, in fact, an external storage). Reinstalling the OS is out of the question here, unfortunately.

If anyone has any knowledge about this sort of problem, I'll be grateful to hear your advice!

Thanx in advance.

You should be able to back out the patch (or patches) using patchrm, once you have booted into single-user from the CD-ROM and mounted your hard drive slices under /a. I think you'll need to add the -R /a option I think to specify where the root path is... I haven't done this personally so someone may be able to confirm.

Check through the Recommended bundle's readmes to identify the most likely candidates; I'd probably start with the Kernel Jumbo Patch and go from there...

Annihilannic.
