I've had so much trouble with 5.1 (especially with the standard plug-ins) that I've gone back to IE 5.0. I've got a nice modern machine with Ram, but this kind of thing seems to be happening more to me than when I had my older machines.
Is it possible there's an extension conflict here?
My two thoughts are this:
1) run the microsoft self repair. I usually do this after nuking everything MS via a sherlock search. Get it all!
2) assuming the above didn't help (any) try rebooting with your extensions off EXCEPT for the reinstalled MS componenets. APPLE MENU | CONTROL PANELS | EXTENSIONS MANAGER. Selected Set should be OS x.x all (or base). Then under the FILE menu Create Duplicate Set and then turn on the MS stuff.
If the browser works in this state it's not playing nicely with something in the extensions folder (perhaps scanner software or maybe adobe type manager) and you've got your culprit.
