Hello,

I've been trying to install the Java plug-in almost 5 times in different ways, but still I get the following message before the installation cancels itself :

"javaws/javaws.exe: Old file not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match."

I've tried manual installations, automatic installations and customized installations, but nothing would work. Also, the file "javaws.exe" can't be found on my computer.

Any idea ???
Thanks!

Have a nice day.

Sounds like you are trying to install a version upgrade, but have no previous version to install over.

Post the exact version (and URL) that you are trying to install.

Hello Sedj,

You're right about the lack of a previous version. I had to uninstall it due to several problems occuring after I had installed a version of Netscape.

Anyway, when I download the plugin, it's written nowhere that this is an upgrade. So I assumed it should install the whole thing even when java isn't already installed.

But after I've read your message, I've searched for a full version to download on java.com, but I couldn't find it.

To answer your question, the JRE I've tried to install is ver.1.4.2.03 ( the only one available on java.com )

Thanks for the help.

I've done some digging, and I think that the old version you had is still hanging around, in part on your computer. Do a search for "java", "jre" and "jvm", and ***carefully*** delete - make sure though that it is not something required by another program !

What OS are you on ? If windows, it may be worth checking the registry, to make sure that the entries have been deleted carefully (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - SOFTWARE - JAVASOFT).

You say things went wrong after installing netscape - I think this comes with a JRE aswell - so it may be conflicting - try uninstalling netscape aswell.

Good luck !

Hello again :)

As I'm too afraid to delete something the system would need, I've sent an email to the support team at although I doubt they will respond :(

I'm still using the good old Win98SE and it's a shame that Microsoft doesn't support Java anymore. The easiest (and most cumbersome) solution would be to re-install windows totally :(

The silliest thing is that although the installation failed it looks like all the files have been copied. But no applet will work.

Thanks again for your time !
